The Last Song

There is a song that I hum/sing whenever I bury the dead. I don’t remember how it started. Sometimes things just come to me while I’m in the middle of a process or ritual. Occasionally, new verses pop into my head, and I add them to it. I see a lot of lives not lived, being “out there” in nature. I think that a long time ago my wee girl heart must have made sense of that by being gifted with some knowing that little souls need to rest and move on. Every deeply spiritual experience that I have had in my lifetime has happened during the final moments of an animal’s life. I’ve been honored by these glimpses of Other, when time virtually stops, even if only for a moment, and I can feel the connection of everything.

Far away, far away

Leave the light of the day

Darkness waits

In her arms you will stay.

I will have, and I’ll hold

Speaks the earth we are told

As the moon watches you

Dressed in gold.

Sleep in peace, child of mine

May your dreams intertwine

With the hearts of the ones

Left behind.

As you run through the stars

Be at one where you are

While the nights spin on by

From afar.

By and by, across time

Oceans swirl, sun still shines

Then you wake, stretch your soul

And you climb.

And above, calls that sun

So your rest falls away

Your sweet soul seeks a home

A new day.
